Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) has officially opened its application for the upcoming 2022 program. Building off of the success of the online programs from 2020 and 2021, YYAS will return once again in the virtual space to offer a week-long program focusing on education access, academic enrichment, and leadership. The program will take place from 20th July to 26th July 2022.
The mission of YYAS is to expose Africa’s brightest young leaders to various opportunities for pursuing tertiary education and to equip them with the skills to serve their communities and the world. In line with Yale’s mission of educational accessibility, YYAS is free for all students.
The vision of YYAS is to mentor and support African secondary school students to become Africa’s next generation of leaders and engaged citizens. Participants in the YYAS program will emerge with an expanded knowledge base, friendships forged with peers from around the continent, and direct access to university student mentors who will help guide them through the university admissions and financial aid application processes.

YYAS is designed to bring together high-achieving and socially-minded secondary students from across the African continent.

What you must know:
- Admitted students can expect seven days of university-style seminars, career guidance, and networking amongst an impressive and diverse cohort of peers.
- The live sessions will take place on various online video conferencing platforms to allow virtual “face to face” interactions and collaboration between participants, instructors, and special guests.
- YYAS is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and gives admissions preference to high-achieving, low-income (i.e. “HALI”) students who do not have university guidance in their schools or communities. To increase accessibility, there is no tuition cost for any student.
